Description and Content:
Teaching in academic contexts confronts lecturers to a wide set of challenges: Not only are they required to apply appealing didactic approaches in order to create inspiring learning environments but they also bare the responsibility to cultivate inclusive spaces, being sensitive to cultural differences and power dynamics within classrooms. Due to the rising societal awareness of social inequalities in terms of race, class, gender as well as other dimensions – and the way they unfold in academic settings – lecturers are more than ever expected to critically reflect upon their teaching practices. This can go along with uncertainties particularly because many lecturers are not necessarily trained in transcultural skills and antidiscrimination methodology which provide practical toolkits for self-reflection and navigating challenging interactions.
This workshop will open a space to exchange experiences, uncertainties and frustrations with fellow lecturers and discuss strategies to deal with the latter. Referring to (self-)reflective methods from anti-bias trainings we will have a closer look at transcultural skills and how they enhance our ability to create inclusive teaching spaces.
